Around 1,000 poppies are being attached to lampposts across Swindon’s busiest roads as the town prepares to mark Remembrance and honour the fallen once again.
The poppies, put up by Swindon Borough Council, acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community, past and present, and complement those displayed by parish councils in neighbourhoods across the Borough.
Council teams have already started putting the poppies in place ahead of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
Councillor Nick Gardiner, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:
“The poppies were well received by the public when we installed them last year and I’m pleased that we’re putting them up again.
“They are a simple but powerful way for us to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, while also recognising everyone who has served, or continues to serve, in our Armed Forces.
“I hope seeing the poppies across the Borough will encourage people to take a moment to reflect and pay their respects.”
Founded in 1921, the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal raises vital funds to support serving personnel, veterans and their families.
A Remembrance Sunday Service is taking place on Sunday, 8 November at the Cenotaph in Regent Circus, starting at 10.45am. There is also a Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph on Armistice Day on Wednesday, 11 November, from 10.55am.
